Nancy’s Story

nancy_sittingIn February of 1986 Nancy Suib packed her car with book samples and publisher catalogs, bid farewell to her friends, family, and book buyers in NYC and drove cross  country to her new home and office in San Francisco. It was an exciting time.

The Tattered Cover in Denver CO. was her first sales call along this journey. Nancy was escorted to the buying offices and Joyce Meskis, the iconic owner, greeted her with a cup of tea. After meeting with Margaret Maupin, the TC adult book buyer, Nancy was given a welcome gift of A Romantic Education, which she still has on her book shelf. Nancy’s next call was at The Bookies with Sue Lubeck. Nancy and Sue talked well into the night about which children’s book titles to promote and their favorite authors and books-it was a very long list.

Then on to SF where she continued to meet exceptionally talented and inspiring book buyers-from Nicky Salan formerly Cover to Cover, Thelma Elkins at Easy Going, Shirley Massengil, Ga Lombard and Judith Milton at B/S Santa Cruz, Paul Yamazaki at City Lights, Clark Kepler at Kepler’s Books, Valerie Lewis at Hicklebee’s Children’s Books, Hut Landon the ED at the NCIBA, and the list goes on.  Twenty Nine years later and she is still so grateful to be a part of this extraordinary community!

Nancy’s passion and commitment to books and reading is demonstrated in her continued support as a Friend of the Oakland and San Francisco Public Libraries. She has previously served as a board member for the NCIBA. She maintains membership with the NCIBA, PNBA, and the MPBA.

Nancy is also committed to giving back to her community and is currently the Vice President of the Women’s Daytime Drop in Center, located in Berkeley CA. They are an organization devoted to supporting women and their children moving from homelessness to independence.

Angel (cat) ReadingNancy also enjoys all forms of  music including  jazz, world music, and classical; theater, film, Chinese brush painting, travel, meditation, and all things food related.  Nancy lives  happily with her life partner Karen, and their two cats-Angel and Bella.
